Apartment Complex Saved

*************** News Release ****************

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 15, 2012

The Johnson City Fire Department responded to a reported apartment fire at 1112 Kings Springs Road, Alpine Ridge Apartments, this morning at 04:07 a.m. Units were dispatched to this location after a tenant was awakened by his smoke detector and found light smoke coming into his apartment from the apartment below. Four Engine Companies, Two Truck Companies, a Shift-Commander, and Washington County EMS Units were originally dispatched for the reported fire. Upon arrival, smoke was very light, and the fire appeared to be contained to one apartment on the lower level. Crews immediately began an aggressive effort to ventilate and attack the fire, while additional personnel worked to awake and evacuate the remainder of the 30-unit apartment complex. Most of the units were occupied, and many of the occupants were unaware of the fire.

The fire was quickly contained by aggressive ventilation and fire attack in the apartment of origin. The building was safely evacuated without any injury to the occupants or fire personnel. The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes of arrival. The combination of early notification by the occupant after hearing his smoke detector, and the fire crews efforts prevent any additional apartments from becoming involved. The occupant of the involved apartment was displaced and planned to stay with friends in the complex.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Johnson City Fire Marshal’s Division, at the time of this release. A total of 17 fire personnel and 3 EMS personnel responded to the incident.

Grower's COOP Wharehouse Fire 13 May 12 in Johnson City TN

At 12:26:34 on 13 May 12, the Johnson City Fire Department received an alarm for a fire at the Grower's COOP Wharehouse located at 1010 W Main St in Johnson City, TN.  The first arriving unit, (arrived at 12:28:46), reported heavy smoke conditions with 50 percent flame involvement. The fire rapidly spread throughout the open-design facility. Fire operations were defensive due to the rapid fire spread and high heat conditons. On scene tactics were to protect exposures from igniting due to the radiating heat conditions. By the time second alarm units arrived, the building structure had collapsed. The Auto Zone and nearby gas station were evacuated. There were no reported injuries. The incident is being investigated by the Johnson City Fire Marshal's Office. Heavy machinery was planned to be used to remove the fallen metal roof to permit firefighters to reach and to extinguish remaining hot spots. A call in of off duty departmental members was necessitated by the event as 7 Engines, 2 Ladder Trucks, a rehab unit, and 4 officer vehicles responded to the incident. The Johnson City Police Department provided traffic control and the Washington County/Johnson City EMS provided rehab monitoring to onscene firefighters.
