Sprinkler System Extinguishes Apartment Fire in Johnson City

Sprinkler System Extinguishes Apartment Fire in Johnson City

On September 10, 2008 at approximately 7:18 pm the Johnson City Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at 1825 W. Lakeview Drive (Silver Creek Apartments).  The first arriving fire unit (Engine 5) found nothing showing from the exterior of the building.  The occupants of Apartment 12-B had safely exited the structure.  Fire Fighters entering the apartment found a single sprinkler head activated extinguishing a fire on the kitchen stove top.  A wedge was placed in the sprinkler head reducing water flow while the valve to the sprinkler system was shut off by fire department personnel.  Johnson City Fire Fighters performed additional salvage operations by using squeegees and mops to remove access water.  Cause of the fire was determined to be unattended cooking.   Fire damage was limited to the cabinets above the stove, the adjacent counter top and microwave.  No damage was reported in the apartments located above or below Unit 12-B. Estimated damage to apartment 12-B is $5,000.

“The automatic sprinkler system in the building made all the difference” said Captain Steve Weaver.  “Combined with the early notification to the fire department it contained a fire that would have spread quickly.”
