Johnson City House Fire Press Release 07-29-2011

On 07-29-2011 at 09:49am, units from the Johnson City Fire Department responded to a condominium fire at 1104 E. Ninth Ave.

Prior to arrival, units advised that there was heavy smoke visible.

First unit on the scene advised there was heavy flames visible in the rear of the condo #1.

It took approximately 60 minutes to bring the fire under control.

One condo was a total loss and the second floor of unit 2 sustained heavy damage. The third unit received very little damage.

No civilians were hurt in the fire but 3 firefighters sustained minor injuries.

Seven engines, two ladders, one rehab unit responded to the call. Other agencies that responded to the scene for assistance included: Washington County / Johnson City EMS, Johnson City Police Department, Washington County Emergency Management Agency and the American Red Cross.

Residents displaced from the fire were being assisted by the American Red Cross.

At the time of this release a cause has not been determined. The fire is currently under investigation by the Johnson City Fire Marshal’s office.

Residential Structure Fire at 2807 S Roan St, Lot 18

The Johnson City Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire at 2807 S Roan St, Lot 18 on 8 Jun 11. First arriving units reported smoke conditions and were able to achieve a rapid knockdown of the fire to effectively contain the fire to the kitchen area. Smoke damage existed throughout the structure. The fire began in the wall and is still under investigation by the Johnson City Fire Department's Fire Marshal Office. There were no reported firefighter or civilian injuries. Three Engines, One Ladder, 1 Rescue Unit, and 1 Command Vehicle responded to the incident delivering a total of fourteen personnel to the scene. Ventilation was conducted to remove smoke and heat. Dispatch time was 16:11:48, with the first unit to arrive on scene at 16:17:22. The fire was controlled at 16:22:11, with the last unit clearing the scene at 17:20:23.

Fully-Involved House Fire Reported by Newspaper Carriers

 

 

 

Johnson City, TN – The Johnson City Fire Department responded to a residential house fire at 809 Forest Ave this morning at 05:40 a.m. The dispatch reported that callers were stating the house well involved, and flames were visible through the roof. The fire was reported by newspaper carriers. Upon on arrival of the first engine company, heavy flames were visible from the 2-story wood-framed home. The structure was approximately 50% involved. It was unclear if anyone was home at the residence, so crews initiated an interior search for victims. No victims were found in the residence. The absence of any occupants were confirmed by a neighbor who was watching after the home. Crews were then faced with heavy fire venting through the roof. The fire was attacked by interior crew initially, and then from an exterior position until the fire was controlled. Crews continued to work to overhaul the structure insuring complete extinguishment of the fire. The cause of the fire has not been determined at this time. The Johnson City Fire Marshal Division remains on the scene. Three engine companies, a ladder company, a manpower units, shift commander, an ambulance, and rescue unit were dispatched to the fire. Two additional engines were called to the scene to provide relief crews. A total of 22 fire personnel eventually responded to the scene including the Interim Chief, Administrative Chief, a Fire Chaplain, and two Fire Marshals. There were no injuries to any crews operating on the scene. The homeowner was contacted and advised of the fire. The home was a total loss, and much of the contents were damaged by heat, smoke, and water.

House Fire 1301 College Heights Road

On Tuesday, April 19^th, the Johnson City Fire Department responded to 1301 College Heights Road on a house fire.

A passerby reported smoke from the roof area of the house.

The first unit arrived within three minutes of dispatch and advised that there was light smoke coming from the attic area of the house. The fire was extinguished quickly and contained to the attic area by 13 firefighters.

Three engines, one ladder and a manpower unit responded to the scene.

No one was home at the time of the fire and there were no injuries reported.

Johnson City Fire Department responds to vehicle crash versus house

The Johnson City Fire Department received an alarm for a vehicle crash versus a home at 03:43:18 on 20 Mar 11. The incident location was at Briarcliff Road and Sells Ave, Nathaniel Court Apartments. An engine company and a ladder company responded at 03:43:43 and arrived on scene at 03:47:19. Other agencies involved in the incident mitigation included Johnson City Washington County EMS, the Johnson City Police Department, the Johnson City Power Board, and support services from the City of Johnson City Building Department to investigate structural integrity issues. Electrical power to the first and second story apartments had to be disconnected. 

Two patients were taken to the hospital. The resident of the occupancy was removed and transported first due to the severity of injuries. The driver of the vehicle was extricated via roof removal of the car. The JCFD assisted in the removal of the vehicle from the apartment complex. The Johnson City Police Department is still investigating the incident. The scene was released to the property manager.

Johnson City Fire Department is awarded $180K Equipment Grant

 

The Johnson City Fire Department has been awarded an operational grant from the 2010 FEMA /Department of Homeland Security Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. The $180,264 grant will be used to enhance firefighter safety and efficiency through an upgrade of the Fire Department’s Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) program and by the purchase of communications headsets for use in the Fire Engines. The grant allows for the modernization of Firefighter’s “air packs” to a lower profile, lighter and more efficient device. The Fire Department’s grant writing committee, headed by Firefighter Kevin Haynes, strives to attain grant awards that increase the feasibility of equipment purchases that improve safety and the quality of service to the citizens of Johnson City. Firefighter Haynes states that grant application process “is a team effort”. The Grant Committee members are Firefighters Kevin Haynes, Joe Cantrill, Jonathan Fulmer, David Sprinkle, and Ted Leinaar.

Fire Cause Determination - Trailer Fire at 2719 S. Roan Street Lot #13

UPDATE:  The Johnson City Fire Marshal's Office has made a determination on the cause of the fire that occurred at 2719 S. Roan St. #13 on December 9, 2010.  Asst. Fire Marshal Lori Ratliff has determined the fire started in a bedroom after a child had been playing with a lighter.  The fire started on a bed and spread throughout the home before firefighters arrived.  A two year old was rescued from a front bedroom by JCFD firefighters.  Two other children sustained injuries and were treated at an area hospital.  The two children have since been released. 

The child and siblings were home with a babysitter while their mother had gone to pick up their father at work.  When the parents arrived back home they found their home in flames and three of their four children outside.  They made numerous attempts to rescue the fourth child before firefighters arrived.  Their mother and father sustained minor injuries from their attempts to rescue the child. Both parents were treated at the hospital and released.
