Business Fire 2011 N. Roan St.

On Thursday January 17, 2013 at approximately 2:00 pm, the Johnson City Fire Department responded to a business fire at the Johnson City Mall.

An alert security guard for the Mall had noticed light smoke inside a service corridor.

 

Upon investigation it was found that there was a small fire in the wall of the corridor. The wall was opened and the fire was quickly extinguished by the Johnson City Fire Department.

Only a few businesses adjacent to the corridor were evacuated as a precaution. Business was resumed within approximately thirty minutes.

No injuries were reported and minimal damage was sustained.

 

Five engines and three ladders responded with a total of 22 personnel.

House Fire at 702 Edgewood Drive

The Johnson City Fire Department responded to a house fire at 702 Edgewood Drive on the morning of 28 November 12. The dispatch time was 05:32:38. The first unit arrived at 05:35:45 and saw smoke coming from the attic eves. Upon entry, the home was filled with smoke. The fire was located in the hallway to the bedroom area and was caused by an overturned kerosene heater. The fire extended into the attic. The Fire Department responded with three engines (pumpers), two ladder companies, and a command vehicle. The Washington County/Johnson City EMS Agency responded and transported three residents to the hospital. The residents received smoke inhalation and one received burns in addition to the smoke inhalation. It is not known as to the extent of the civilian injuries. Johnson City FD responds to structure fire with victim rescue

The Johnson City Fire Department responded three Engines, two Ladder companies, and a command unit  to a structure fire at 1407 E Watauga Ave on 20 Sept 12. Dispatch time was 16:24:36. The first unit on scene arrived at 16:28:07 to find a smoke involved residence with fire venting from the left side of the structure and from two windows.

One crew initiated an aggressive interior attack containing the fire to one room. Another crew rescued an elderly woman (age unknown at this time) that had succommed to the smoke. The patient was transported to the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital by Sullivan County EMS as Washington County EMS units were assigned to the school bus wreck on Mt. Wesley Rd.

Preliminary investigation assumes the fire to have begun in the bedroom area. Fire Marshals from the Johnson City Fire Department are still on scene conducting an ongoing investigation as to the cause of the fire.

It is reported that eight children and three adults lived in the residence. The American Red Cross is providing aid to the family.

Books and Business Saved From Fire

 

                The Johnson City Fire Department was called respond to a business fire at the Overmountain Press and Saber Printers, 335 W. Walnut Street, today at approximately 1:00 p.m. for a reported fire in the business.

 

                Upon arrival, Fire crews found the owners, employees, and Johnson City Police Department Officers on the scene of the fire. The owners advised the fire was in a book storage area near the rear of the building. The fire was reportedly burning in the ceiling tiles around a fluorescent-light fixture. The owners reported the fire had been burning for several minutes, and they had attempted to extinguish the fire with portable fire extinguishers.

 

                Fire Crews entering the building from the rear alley were meet with dense smoke conditions inside the building. The fire was visible in the ceiling tiles in the center of the storage area. Crews were able to rapidly extinguish the fire with minimal water. The fire was quickly contained within 6-minutes of arrival.

 

                The entire printing and publishing company was filled with the dense smoke from the ceiling tiles. Coincidentally, the tiles were of  a similar type to the ceiling tiles that contribute to the heavy-dense smoke that contributed to the 16 fatalities at the John Sevier Center on Christmas Eve in 1989.

 

                Damage from the fire was contained to the ceiling and lighting in the storage area. Extensive overhaul was conducted in the storage room to insure the fire would not rekindle in the cardboard boxes and books. Water damage was minimal, but several cases of books were covered with the dry chemical from the portable extinguishers used by the owners prior to the Fire Department’s arrival.

 

                The Johnson City Fire Department would like to remind the public that portable extinguishers should be used to control only small, minor fires. If the fire does not easy go out, Please stop attempting to suppress the fire, call the 9-1-1, and everyone evacuate the building immediately. Even if the fire is extinguished, Please call 9-1-1 to request the Fire Officials to investigate to insure complete extinguishment.

 

                The services of the Johnson City Fire Department are provided to the Citizens of Johnson City for their welfare and well-being. Please do not hesitate to call with your emergency. Any delays in notification can severally increase danger to lives and lose of property.

Mobile Home Fire 605 Carter Sells Road

At approximately 7:25 p.m., Units from the Johnson City Fire Department were dispatched to 605 Carter Sells Road, Ramblewood Trailer Park, Lot #222 for a reported Mobile Home Fire.

 

Upon arrival, crews found moderate smoke coming from the residence. The occupants, two adults and two children, has evacuated from the structure. An aggressive attack was made on the fire, and it was confined to area around the stove in the kitchen. The fire was rapidly extinguished within 5 minutes of the initial call. Four engine companies, two truck companies, and a shift-supervisor responded from the Johnson City Fire Department. A unit from the Johnson City Police Department was also dispatched to assist. A Rescue Unit and an Ambulance from Washington County EMS responded to provide care for the occupants.

 

One of the adults had attempted to extinguish the fire and was overcome by smoke. This occupant was handed-off by Firefighters to emergency personnel from Washington County EMS for continued care. The occupant was later transported to JCMC with minor injuries. The occupants condition did not appear life threatening, and the current condition is unknown at this time.

 

Damage was only minimal to the structure. The cause of the fire was determined to be a grease fire resulting from cooking.

 

No firefighters were injured during suppression efforts.

House Fire at 716 University Pky.

On Saturday, July 14, 2012 at approximately 4:42pm, the Johnson City Fire Department responded to a house fire at 716 University Pky.

The first engine arrived on the scene in under 2 minutes and advised that flames were visible.

A search of the residence revealed that there were no occupants inside the structure.

The fire was extinguished in approximately 20 minutes. Units responding included 4 engines and 2 ladder trucks and a rehab vehicle. A total of 17 personnel actively participated.

No injuries were reported.

The JCFD was assisted by members of the Johnson City Police Department and Johnson City  / Washington County EMS.

Moderate damage was sustained to the 2 story structure. University Parkway was shut down in the north bound lanes for approximately 2 hours but has since reopened.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Johnson City Fire Marshal’s Office. Preliminary investigations indicate that this was not an intentionally set fire.

Structure Fire

On Tuesday July 3, 2012 at approximately 11:08 pm., units from the Johnson City Fire Department were dispatched to a reported structure fire at 1009 Buffalo Street.

The call was received from officers of the Johnson City Police Department. Police reported the building was on fire with confirmed occupants inside.

 

The first fire department unit arrived within 3 minutes of the call. At this time police had removed at least 2 subjects from the building. The building, which contained seven apartment units was searched by members of the JCFD and the fire was extinguished.

 

No injuries were reported and all occupants were accounted for.

 

One apartment received extensive damage.

 

The American Red Cross was called to the scene to assist residents with alternate lodging arrangements

 

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Johnson City Fire Marshal’s Office. No other details are available at the time of this release.
